In attempting to find the root of the problem, I checked Device Manager and discovered that the ONLY device listed under "Network Adapters" was one called "avast! SecureLine TAP Adapter v3". Naturally, it wasn't able to connect to this network either, on account of the fact that it doesn't exist (more specifically, the Network and Sharing Center troubleshooter told me that SecureLine didn't have a valid IP configuration, which it wouldn't have, because it doesn't exist). When I tried to reconnect, I discovered that it wasn't detecting any wireless networks whatsoever, even though my laptop which is literally an inch away from it shows six available networks including my own, and was instead attempting to connect to a nonexistent ethernet connection entitled "SecureLine". So when I came home from work today I discovered that my desktop was no longer connected to the internet.
